Eating My Words
I used to be appalled by stuff like this, but given my current circumstances, it's looking like a very good thing. There's a time when your child is old enough to know better than to run away from you, but it's not likely to be until some time after (s)he starts walking, and I have no doubt that Jay will be faster than I am by the time no. 2 emerges, so...

We're It!
We've been mass-tagged by Kate. The reason I say "we" is that Kate really wants to know what music Jay likes to listen to. Unfortunately, the most I can say about that is that he really likes TV theme songs. He loves the opening of Veggietales and most of the VT music as well. He loves the soul sounds of the theme song to The Wire and the jazzy intro to Bertie and Jeeves. He usually will bounce to music with a fast beat, so I probably ought to try him on Ace of Base, but unfortunately, the stereo is a great temptation to him (especially when there is music playing and lights lighting) and very much off limits, so he doesn't get to listen to a whole lot of CDs. Paul has no mercy and will subject him to anything from Khatchaturian to very '70s Christian music when the poor little guy goes to bed. My poor son.

Jay loves his daddy, and vice versa!

I Really Ought to be in Bed Right Now...
but Paul's out with a friend, and the playard he bought at Walmart Wednesday was still sitting in the foyer in its box. Since I do Saturday mornings solo, I wanted it set up so I could try to put Jay down for his morning nap downstairs. He's so heavy and squirmy, I feel like it's just a matter of time before we both end up in a heap at the bottom of the stairs. So I managed to set it up. It wasn't too hard, but the whole "bottom snapping in place" was rather iffy. As long as there's weight on top of it, the playard won't collapse, I'm confident, but it never 'snapped'.

Having accomplished this task, I found myself hungry again. I ate too many potato chips before dinner and couldn't get more than half my dinner down (black bean soup a la Paul). I was very nauseous after Jay went to bed and the thought of that half bowl of soup had become repulsive. So I was surprised to find myself enjoying it just now, after warming it up. Who knew I could eat something healthy and hearty after 10 PM and enjoy it?

Boy, I don't look too good...

Row, Row, Row Your Boat
Jay has finally figured out how to make his rub-a-dub-dub three men in a tub spin on his little nursery rhyme table. There's a yellow plastic cylinder at the tub hub which you have to push, but you have to release it fairly cleanly to get much spinning action. For some reason, the toy plays "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" after the wave sounds (maybe rub-a-dub doesn't have a tune?). He was having lots of fun today making his men spin and listening to me sing along with RRRYB.

Later, Jay was trying to climb up onto the loveseat. There was a chenille throw on the seat, which was the first thing he grabbed (it's a lot easier to grab than my admittedly ill-fitting slip cover). He pulled, pulled, and pulled some more until the whole thing was pooled in front of the loveseat and I was laughing heartily at his futile efforts. He looked up at me and gave a little laugh like "I don't really get it, but I guess if you think it's funny, it must be!" Then he grabbed and pulled a clean romper which was draped over the arm to my further amusement, and dropped it on the pile of chenille. Then he started picking up the throw, maybe just to entertain me. Who can tell with kids these days? ;)

I Wish MY House Were This Pretty

I Think I Need a Feeding Tube
This must be one hungry baby! Anybody have a tip on how to stave off morning sickness throughout the day?

I Love My Greenpoints
We have a Lowe's Foods here in town (in walking distance, actually) where we do most of our grocery shopping. When they started the S&H Greenpoints program, we signed up. By now, we have enough Greenpoints for this. That'll save us $100. It's one of the two big-ticket items I'm anticipating a need for (the other is a pack'n'play, the Evenflo version of which is available at Wal-Mart for $50). Yay, Lowe's Foods!

Maybe a Girl?
"Morning" sickness seems worse this time around... I'm kinda hoping for a Nora!

Here We Go Again
Just spent the "better" part of an hour in the local branch of my OB GYN practice so they could tell me what I already know:
1. I'm pregnant
2. I'll have to have an ultrasound to find out how far along I am

which means that I get to call the Burlington (main office) number (as I did yesterday), explain my situation (as I did yesterday) and get an appointment for Burlington.

Maybe I should deliver in Durham...

Three for Three!

Long, Long Week
For anyone who's wondering, MTW is not sending us to Ukraine in the foreseeable future. It was a long, hard week, particularly for me, but more about that later (not much more, though).

In the meantime, Jay was enjoying the constant attention of two of his devoted grandparents, and he did a pretty good job of exhausting them. He did not, however, learn how to walk while we were gone, so at least we didn't miss any important milestones. He is 11 months old today!

And you may notice
That there is not so much hair overhanging Jay's ears in the most recent set of photos. He's not really properly shorn, but he's a little less ragged. Now that I have found The Scarlet Pimpernel series on line, I'm not likely to have time to finish his trim (really I'm kidding, y'all). Actually, maybe I can get some help holding him still this weekend and get him a little bit tidier.

I'm cool.

Really Sad
It shouldn't surprise me that the Russian military was happy to let more men die on a submarine. I guess I'm just naive.

In Ukraine, let's pray the change is real!

Naptime
After wailing like one who has lost all hope of ever seeing a goldfish cracker ever again, Jay began playing with his crib aquarium and squealing. The sleep is yet to be seen.

Lotsa Toys!
So Jay and I did, in fact, go to the toy store on Saturday. We walked and looked and found lots of toys I would have liked to buy, but ended up with a couple of activity balls (hard plastic) and what I like to call a baby gameboy. No big bouncy balls in the store =( That's what we get for going to the outlet.

The KB Toys store is providentially located a few doors down from the Pepperidge Farm outlet, also known as The Goldfish Store. Jay first had Goldfish at my parents' house: BABY Goldfish, to be exact. Sadly, the outlet only had normal Gf and giant Gf. But, at 3 bags/$2, regular Gf are just fine. Jay was getting kind of hungry by this point in the expedition, and the sight of the Gf bags did not placate, but rather inflamed his impatience to eat. Little did I know that he remembered what sort of containers the cheesy crunchy snacks came in. That being the case, we hurried out of there so I could give him a few to snack on, and we drove back home.

Saturday night we were blessed with a visit from CEP of What a Rummy Nation, who was able to stay until today. She and I often enjoy visiting the antique mall, and so we contrived to go yesterday, which meant waiting for Jay to finish his afternoon nap and then packing him up to come along. The only purchase of the day was a small wooden abacus, which Jay would not relinquish to be checked out. Thankfully, all they really needed was the tag, which was fairly easily removed while the wire and wood contraption remained in its new owner's jealous grasp. It wasn't cheap, but it looked like a nice abacus, and Jay sure liked it, so $20 wasn't a whole lot to pay.

Today he's been grumpy. His abacus is in the car and his "aunt" CEP left during his morning nap. Or he could just be tired.
