Let's Just Say...
We're keeping the Pack'n'Play up. And Jay seems to think the name is very misleading.

... And Two Giant Steps Back
Jay did enough getting up last night to make up for the whole week. Long story short, by 3 AM I gave up, dumped Jay in the crib, and brought Isaac to bed with us.

I guess I'm going to have to re-erect the Pack'N'Play to serve as a reminder for Jay of what happens to toddlers who don't stay in their beds.

Two Steps Forward, One Tiny Step Back
Isaac only woke at: 8:30 PM, 2 AM, 6:30 AM. Yay!!!
Jay woke somewhere between those last two and climbed into bed with us. I asked him to go back to his bed, which he didn't do, but at least he lay down and went right back to sleep.

All in all, a better night than most in recent history. Here's to increasing sleep trajectories in the future!

Cars
M: (Advising John on whom to consult for the names of the engine parts on her model 1955 T-Bird) Uncle Todd knows a lot about cars.
J: Todd cars. One two three four five cars.
M: At least.
J: Six, seven eight nine ten cars.
M: OK then.

Toddler Bed Update
Nighttimes are still humming along. Naptimes are a different story. It's like day and night. So to speak.

Still, we are very proud of our Jay Bear. Good thing, too, because he is definitely turning into a "two-year-old". He still does not use the word "no" to answer questions or requests- he just ignores them or (better yet) becomes a screaming lump on the floor. *Sigh*

Toddler Bed Success
Jay has slept the past two nights in his toddler bed (or his "[big] boy bed" as he likes to call it) with no apparent difficulty. He has stayed until his regular waking time, no visits downstairs or anything! The first night of success made me bold enough to move Isaac into the crib last night, and he did very well, too. He woke up once a little before 10, maybe (I was on the phone, so Paul handled that one), he woke up at 12:30 with a leaky diaper (new diaper, new "jammies", some milk, and I was back in bed about 1:15), and he woke up at 6. (He had some more milk and slept next to Daddy while I showered). This was VERY good for Isaac. I've been sabotaging myself, I'm sure, by bringing him to bed to nurse in the middle of the night, but it's so tempting to go right back to bed when the bed is RIGHT THERE. When I have to wake up enough to go to the boys' room, it's much easier to just stay awake until he's back in his own bed asleep. So here's to our boys sharing a room!! May lots of sleeping be accomplished under our roof =]

Major Trouble
I just wanted to point out that Maj. Trouble was tangling with a red wagon today, and does, in fact, have a bloodied nose. Just to complete the ensemble. Of course, right after that photo was taken, Jay popped the gondolier hat on. Then he just looked kinda, I don't know, Mexican?

New Year, Old Problems
Plus one new one- Isaac's peek-a-boo habit has brought down the living room curtains several times this week. Putting them back up is getting old. If he would just stick to playing peek-a-boo, we'd be fine, but no game is complete without a Tarzan swing at the end. When I hung the curtain rods back in the winter of 2000-01, I think it was, I wasn't thinking that someday my 21 pound offspring was going to suspend himself from them. They just aren't built to handle the rigors of sweet little infant boys.

So things have been busy! Work has been stressful and long. I ended up spending much of my first day of Christmas vacation ensuring that a report went out. What with all the unpleasantness of work these days, I just don't even feel like hooking my laptop up since I don't have to anymore. So I pay more attention to the little people and less to my blog and everyone else's.

The kids have been busy, busy, busy! Jay sings a lot of songs nowadays, including the ABC song (kinda). He's been doing some counting, and can count to ten, though the two usually gets skipped for some reason. He knows his Thomas the Tank Engine characters, and has followed his cousin Beka's trajectory: VeggieTales to LarryBoy to Thomas.

Well, I was just about to blog celebratorily about our progress with Isaac and sleep when he woke up crying, a mere 20 or so minutes into his nap. It's certainly too early to write off the new method, but I am disappointed. Last night he cried for about an hour, but on my second visit I was able to convince him to lie down and go to sleep holding onto my hand, but in his own bed. It took a much shorter time for him to go to sleep this afternoon, but it didn't last long, and I haven't gotten him to go back to sleep yet. I'm not sure whether the Winne-the-Pooh projector Grandma B gave him for Christmas is helping or not. It doesn't really attach to a Pack'n'Play, but I had it leaned so that the images were on the side netting, and Isaac wasa touching them for a little while. Jay loves it, for what that's worth. He was watching it last night saying "Donkey!" "Tiger!" "Pooh!"

Dirty Baby
We have a few choices in dealing with maintaining our children's angelic appearance throughout a long day of dirty activities. Isaac's day is always the dirtier, due to the fact that we feed him. This problem is compounded by the fact that he is at the stage where, hungry or not, he finds it necessary to aerosolize as much of his food as possible so that he can, literally, inhale it. While the aerosolized bits don't create much of a mess (especially if you burn them in the air), a good portion of each mouthful becomes more of a particulate, and some of it often becomes what we will refer to as a "glop".

Our choices to deal with the incompatability of clothing and food come down to the following:
1. A fresh change of clothing for Isaac and the parent on duty after each meal. If we follow the care instructions on the clothes, we would need to do laundry approximately every hour of our waking day.
2. Bunny suits for the baby and the PoD. A bib is so futile at this stage that I just don't bother. My sister is well-connected with the cleanroom culture, so this might be a possibility...
3. Ignore stains on child's clothing and that of the PoD.

If you've seen our house, you know that #3 fits our lifestyle pretty darn well. So if you see us out, and our clothes are clean, we're probably on our way to a wedding, a funeral, or one of the many cocktail parties we attend with our children. Otherwise, let's hope we're not.

Busy, Busy, Busy!
But we're all doing fine. I hope all of you had a lovely Christmas and New Years! We traveled in our van (though it does not currently have even VHS video capability- likely as a result of the new stereo), which, like the boys, was generally well-behaved, the weather didn't cause us any trouble, the boys had fun with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins (though Isaac decided to come down with a pretty acute case of stranger/separation anxiety), and we just had a pleasant trip. The boys came down with colds when we got back (I knew they'd be sick after Jay played in a crowded play area at the mall in MI, but c'est la vie- they've both had colds before!), but at least our little segment of the family was unaffected by a stomach bug which plagued much of the Ohio (G) side of the family and the similar troubles which beset poor aunt CEP more recently.

Photos to follow, though (kicking myself) only of the OH visit. I did not have my camera out once in MI to record Isaac's first meeting with his B cousins. Stupid on my part.
