Yardwork With Toddlers
I don't know how Jordana does it. I decided to buy some annuals while we were at WalMart: Jay could help pick some out and we'd all spend some time outside while I weeded and planted for the first time in years. Naturally, Jay started out very helpful (Isaac was napping in his car seat, since that 5 minute drive from WalMart was just too much for him). He saw me pulling weeds, and decided he should do the same. "Find dirt!" (I tell you the truth, that's what he said) alternated with "Kwean up! Kwean up, guys!" (seems to be something he learned in Sunday School). It was all very nice. Then he got bored. No problem! Out from the van comes Toby, the old-fashioned brown tram engine, who likes to drive up gutter downspouts and get lost in the daffodils. OK, so some daffodils got trampled, and, yes, the little packs of annuals may have gotten stepped on as well. Big deal!

Escalation, my friends. Toby (don't ya know) feels the need to wander. Down the driveway. Into the street. Into the invisible (to me) back yard. Into the back porch. He and his friend get summoned back to the yard repeatedly. Then, Toby needs to ride in the stroller. Downtown. I think I probably said something like, "No, Jay, you can't take Toby downtown. You need to stay close to Mama." Fast forward two minutes: "Jay, come back in the yard. Where's Toby?" Guess where! Right at Mama's feet. Jay seemed to think that if at least one of them was keeping an eye on me, all would be well.
