Ancient History









At least, from the perspective of a 5-month-old. These photos are from our trip north at the end of June. Lots of fun was had by all, and the boys were tremendous travelers.

Tooth Two
Daniel's second tooth appeared yesterday, right next to the first one. He still hasn't bitten anything other than my finger (which, let's face it, I deserved!).

He really sounds like he's saying "Hungry." Or "ugly". I think I'd better go!

Episode IV: A New Tooth
It's true: Daniel has sprouted a fine little baby tooth, somewhere near the middle of his lower gum. He's been gentlemanly enough not to bite me while I feed him- he was gnawing on a knuckle or something when I realized he finally had a pearly white appearing. I was slightly surprised to discover that it had already poked through when I explored the area with my finger. He'll probably refrain from biting until one of the top teeth emerges, I guess. Hooray for a tooth, and hooray for not having been bitten!

Note to Self (and Whoever Else)
I just said, "I wonder what you would like for your birthday." Not missing a beat, Jay replied, "Um, I fink I would wike a Swinky."

Other ideas: Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who, a globe. There are quite a few things on my wishlist, too. The gear set especially looks good, though Jay saw the other items and said he wanted all of them. Go figure!

For the Toddler With the Larger Appetite
We have some store-brand freezer waffles we like to eat for breakfast sometimes. Whenever I mention them, Isaac chimes in, "I want awfuls!"

Similarly, I had to crack up when I was preparing some fruit to serve as a side with lunch when Isaac yelled, "I want antelope!" Thankfully, he was satisfied with a slice of cantaloupe instead.

By the Way
So they wanted $40 for the stroller when I got to the WalMart in the next town over (actually, a few towns over- the next town over from the House). I really, really liked that stroller, but the competitor's stroller was only $20. In theory, the features were the same. Having taken it on a spin to VBS down at Mebane Pres, I am having buyer's remorse.

The Graco was hard enough to assemble that I needed Paul's help. Cotter pins? No thank you. I'm just glad we were able to find the ones we dropped! It's a slim enough stroller, and even though it doesn't do the umbrella fold (it's full-width when you collapse it), it stores in the van OK. The buckles are harder to unclasp, the storage features are just lower quality, the sunshade is only useful at high noon, the wheels have got to be smaller, and the handle is not nearly as ergonomic as the Evenflo, which is likely to be more of a problem for a taller person than for me. Also, you need both hands to fold it- not that I was co-ordinated enough to fold the other one while holding onto the baby, but you could do it, in theory.

It was just one more part of an overall rather crummy day. Maybe I'll like it better Thursday.

Drool
Unfortunately, this house is in Graham, which is even further from where I work and from our church than where we live now. I drove past it today, and the neighborhood is awe-inspiring. Mansions, I tell you. And a few blocks away from the county courthouse, with all the eateries and funneries that entails.

I really think this is an awesome investment opportunity. More than that, I'd love to live in a house like that. Oh boy, would I!

First the Camera, Now the Stroller
This is getting ridiculous. The good news is all the boys made it back from the mall. The bad news is that no one thought to pack up the stroller. A call to the mall was futile. The other good news is that the stroller is in stock at the same bargain price the next town over. At this point, I'm planning on heading that way in the morning to replace ours. It's an excellent all-purpose stroller, and relatively easy to store in the van so it doesn't get all wet and covered with outdoor debris.

[To self] It's only $30. It's only $30.

Of course, there was also the cool stroller accessory bag too. (This, more or less). It was more of a necessity when we were using the double stroller, though. The Evenflo has a pretty good amount of storage and a place for lidded cups, so I suppose I'll survive without the bag.

Aunt Jan, Comedienne


Unfortunately, this is my sleek camera's swan song. I took the camera out of my purse tonight only to discover that the display, aka the viewfinder, is gone. Toast.

I ordered a cheaper camera to replace it. Free shipping, very good reviews. Let's hope this one lasts a bit longer. It's a lot clunkier, so I probably won't be tempted to carry it around in my purse.

Future Film Director
At dinner tonight, Daniel was sitting in Isaac's old seat (the "big" boys now have their own dining and activity table, generously provided by Heather & Greg, though Isaac likes to remind us that Daniel's seat is his anyway) with a couple of toys on the tray to keep him busy. One of these toys was the zebra from the Little People zoo set, and Daniel was demonstrating his proficiency in zebra-toppling (Isaac was aiding him in this by popping out of his seat to right the equine every time it fell). Jay remarked at the first toppling "That was not passionate."

I asked him if that was what he had said, and he repeated it. He kept saying that as the zebra fell again and again. Finally he said, "Babies are not passionate with zebras." The lightbulb went on. "Jay," I said, "do you mean 'compassionate'?" "Yeah, babies are not compassionate with zebras. They knock them over. Even big zebras."

There you have it from the expert (a boy who is still convinced that zebras say "Zzzzzzz").

The Arthritis Mom blog is a great comfort to me- Jennie articulates the same struggles I have been facing. It's good to feel like there's somebody else out there dealing with similar challenges (and more- she has 1-year-old twins!!)

I'm planning on getting some footage of Daniel with said sister-in-law up. It's highly entertaining... Maybe tomorrow.
