New Addition

John's favorite birthday present came a bit early. The Burlington Animal Shelter reduced adoption fees by half for a week in August, and John chose himself a new pet. Introducing:
Apple!

Reciprocation

Well, I guess I wasn't thinking, because Isaac did already hand down one of his birthday gifts. The foam sword does not have a plastic core and is therefore given to a certain floppiness (which didn't prevent it from being the hot item on the playground today, I might mention!). Isaac decided it was not worthy of his attentions and gave it to Daniel, fully confident that he'll receive a "better" one on his next birthday. It's been four days, and he hasn't asked for it back, not even to borrow, so here's hoping that's settled!

Party Time, Excellent..

Jay had a blast at his birthday party! Some new 6-y-o quotables:
~"Turkey sandwiches!!" *gasp* *gasp* "With CHEESE!!" (upon being asked to choose his birthday lunch)
~"I just can't thank you *enough* for the dinosaur pellets!" (bidding a generous friend goodbye)
~"It looks like the surface of Callisto, one of Jupiter's moons." (gazing into his microscope for the first time, at a Hershey's kiss paper flyer)
~"Fourteen" (Answering my question "How old is it?", a response to Isaac's assertion that today is Air's birthday)
~"I love it so much that I want to give you ten kisses. Or maybe twenty. Yes, I want to give you 20 kisses!" (before he kissed me 24 times, after seeing his cake with the green cacti)

We are so blessed and so very thankful for our wonderful 6-year-old, and his handsome brothers :)

Exciting Week for Oldest
Today, Jay became a Bobcat/Cub Scout (I am not up on the technicalities), and tomorrow, he becomes a SIX Year Old!! Daddy took him to his meeting (the boy and Daddy from the next block were there too :) ). According to Paul, it was all announcements and "boring as it could be". John had a radically different view. He told me he had a great time and that the other first-graders were very nice ("Like he got to talk to them!" said Daddy). But Daddy is happy that Jay is excited (infectious enthusiasm is one of his very strong suits), so next stop is Graham to pick up a uniform, I guess!

FIVE?!?

Jay is five today! He got his red fire truck cake (just don't look too closely!) and Daddy took him out and bought him a bike with training wheels and a good outdoor ball to play with, and then after dinner he opened his wrapped presents- a Sesame Street DVD set spanning the years from Daddy's birth to just after mine, a church outfit complete with turtle tie ("I love turtles!" said he), and a set of Math Machines from Aunt Cathy, Uncle Josh and Jonah. A card with some cash in it arrived from the Pennsylvania branch of the family (to save, or to spend? I wonder what will happen with it!) He had a great birthday and even shared his math machines with his brothers (there are four, after all!) We also got to go to the They Might Be Giants concert in Raleigh on Saturday (in preparation for which, we had to purchase MP3s of "Here Come the ABCs" and "Here Come the 123s")! All in all, Jay's had a great 5th birthday, and he's still got a gift or two in the mail!

How Wrong Can You Possibly Go With an Entire Vial of Red Frosting Color?

Well, it's not spectacular, but hopefully it's good enough for a three-year-old.

Meantime, Daddy's been laid low by an unnamed illness. Hopefully he'll feel better in the morning and no one else will fall prey...

Another Birthday
And I'm at a loss as to how to celebrate. Isaac would love a Blue's Clues b-day, but we're getting down to the wire on party planning. Jay's usually the one with memorable birthday parties, so I hate to be low-key AGAIN for poor Isaac (which is inevitable at this point), but there it is. Hopefully Uncle Todd will be able to grace us with his presence for at least part of the weekend, and I may be able to find some Blue's Clues stuff if I start now!

Note to Self (and Whoever Else)
I just said, "I wonder what you would like for your birthday." Not missing a beat, Jay replied, "Um, I fink I would wike a Swinky."

Other ideas: Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who, a globe. There are quite a few things on my wishlist, too. The gear set especially looks good, though Jay saw the other items and said he wanted all of them. Go figure!

Cheapskate
I just paid for Isaac's birthday present by means of my amazon rewards gift certificate and some leftover Christmas gift certificate balance. He already got "Jay's" gift- a cute little fire truck with a tiny screwdriver you can use to wind up the drive gear or to attach/detach the hook & ladder. It's been a popular toy for $3.

Busy-ness
Things here have been hectic. Paul has gotten a lot of work scheduled at his work-from-home listening job. In fact, I believe he's scheduled to work every Tuesday and Thursday this month. This is very good, financially speaking. It's probably even good for Paul (though this particular job can get a bit mind-numbing, I suspect). However, it puts a little extra stress on the boys and me, and potty training is right out at the moment. Why, you ask? Because there is no way to keep my two children quiet. We could go upstairs and play with Jay's train set, except that it's 100 degrees outside, and as the outdoors go, so goes the upstairs. More or less.

So we leave.

We used to like to go to the zoo of an occasional T-day, however, temperatures in excess of 90 degrees and pregnant ladies outdoors for hours on end don't mix so well. Sometimes we walk to the library and various downtown destinations, but not when it's 100 degrees out. A dear sweet friend of ours kept the boys for me this morning so I could get my ultrasound, and has invited us over for a day next week, which is absolutely wonderful! Paul's over there teaching one of her daughters piano once a week, and the boys (which is to say Isaac) have gotten rather used to our friend. Truly a friend to be thankful for!

We spend a lot of time at shopping malls. Which means I buy stuff. Today, Isaac got a cool ball that is really a bunch of rings melded together. He likes it quite well. I got Jay a toy that has chipboard lace-up shapes and foam cut-outs which can be strung. He is quite enthusiastic about it too. I've just got to stop buying stuff all the time. I got Jay his birthday present (a Lightning McQueen car that talks and drives when you shake it) and one for Isaac (Mater) back when my family was here. I also ordered him a Henry train for his wooden train set and a replacement pen for his My First Leap Pad (apparently they go out a lot, and ours has). That's really more than enough. I will stop!!!

I think I need to call up some friends with little folks and see if we can arrange a play date. At their house!

Birthday Photos

Cake courtesy of Cathy Plus One and family

Aunt Christy was able to join the festivities

Isaac thought the cake was pretty good until...

"Somebody get this off of me!!!"

(He may have been just a wee bit tired...)

Jay enjoyed spending time with his buddy Jonah and eating his (Jonah's) snacks.
