"Sometimes People Lose Interest in Things"
Jay has been the quip king today. He got onto my facebook status earlier today with "I'm pretending to be God" while he was happily placing animal stickers on a pastoral/woodland scene. Then tonight he offered to read me a Magic Treehouse book. So in between his offer and helping him find all of them, I got interrupted by dessert, piano lessons, and the other boys (not necessarily in that order and certainly not in uniform frequency). Then he hemmed and hawed, but never said he'd changed his mind (I did tell him to tell me if he didn't want to read to me anymore), he delivered the classic line at the top. *Shaking head* He finally decided that he could "focus" his "reading concentration" enough to read us a picture book about LarryBoy and some special gumballs. This he did skillfully, and with lots of expression. I'm guessing the difference is that he's heard the LarryBoy book read out loud (and on numerous occasions), whereas his confidence regarding the Magic Treehouse books is considerably lower. Anyway, I thought the whole loss of interest quip was pretty clever.

Daniel's Favorite
Daniel loooooves Bo'. We were wandering through Dollar General, spending some of the money Jonah's grandma gave the boys. John and Isaac had no shortage of items on their wish lists, but Daniel was a bit more inscrutable (given that the answer to every question is "no"...) Finally, something in the workbook/ giftwrap aisle caught his eye. "BO'! BO'!!". Daniel had spotted a VeggieTales workbook. I found a different, slightly pricier one ($2 vs $1) that included a poster & a growth chart, so that's the one we bought. Several times a day, Daniel will stop on his way through the living room to point out his favorite tomato. I didn't manage to capture the full measure of his enthusiasm, but this'll give you some idea!

VeggieTales Books
Grandma B gave us some VT books several years ago which came with CDs: one for each of the "God is Bigger Than the Bogey Man", "Where is My Hairbrush?", "My Day", and "I Can Be Your Friend" songs. There was a time when Isaac would carry one with him and be content for the better part of an hour- giddy, almost, at times- turning the pages and looking at the photos of children and illustrations of vegetables. His favorite is "GiBTtBM", and he will bring it to me when he finds it, say "bigges' book", push it into my hands, and wait for the show to begin. Lately he has been trying to help out with the reading, especially on Junior's parts, just like Jay used to do. It is (of course) adorable. And I will almost certainly never manage to record it.

Been Talking to His Grandfolks
On Christmas morning, Paul told Jay it was Christmas, and Jay told him that it was not, because it wasn't snowing. Where could he have come up with that idea? (Probably VeggieTales, actually ;) )

I am a Cruel, Cruel Mother
As I mentioned in this post, I think it's really funny that the very beginning of "Where's God When I'm S-Scared?" always startles my children. I was really tickled today, though, when Isaac was standing up, staring at the screen, and the "Hey, kids!" startled him so badly, he started, flailed his arms to try and regain his balance, and then plopped down flat on his rear end. Yes, I laughed at him right then and there. It was too funny not too, and he's not like Jay, who always used to take offense at jokes he wasn't in on. He asked for that video, so either he likes it, or they just keep forgetting!

Love Those Veggies!
The boys have some Veggie Tales books from Grandma B which are based on some of the Veggie Tales songs. Isaac LOVES these books. Jay likes them, but really only if someone is reading [singing] them to him. Isaac will sit with a book and sing to himself, shaking his head vigorously back and forth from time to time. I first noticed this a couple of weeks ago when he was reading Where is my Hairbrush?. He said something like, "wa wa wa buhsh!" [Oh where oh where oh where is my hairbrush?]. Tonight I was singing "God is Bigger [Than the Bogeyman]", not really reading it from the book, since Isaac was holding the same in a very possessive manner. Anyway, I discovered that Isaac was singing along, really just a word here or there, and putting in most of the ever-popular "me!"s at the end (like his brother before him). I asked him if he wanted to watch the video, which of course he did, but (probably since I had a camera rolling), he didn't sing with the tape. *Sigh*. One of these days, I hope to record it, because it's cute as [where's CEP with an appropriate southernism when you need her?? ;) ]

Tech Support for Two-Year-Olds
This morning, Jay came downstairs with me while I was getting ready for work. After I prepared his "Oatdeal!" (and investigated his rummagings in the kitchen drawer), I got into the shower. Shortly thereafter, I heard the door creak open and the THUD THUD THUD of toddler feet. I suggested to Jay that he start a video. His current favorite, Where's God When I'm Sssscared? was already in the VCR, I pointed out to him, and he went off to watch his VeggieTales. Shortly thereafter, the creak announced Jay before his plaintive "Need hewp! Need hewp!" We've discussed the "triangle" button, but the VCR was off, and we haven't discussed the power button. I advised him to take the video out (something he surely knows how to do) and to push it back in. The little face bobbed back behind the door, and I expected some uninterrupted detangling time. Wrongly, as it turned out, and this time I answered the "Need hewp!"s with, "Did you take the video out and put it back in?" "Yeah." "Did you turn the TV on?" "Nope!" "Try turning the TV on."
It seemed to have worked. I just hope the video wasn't past the part where Bob says, "Hey, kids!" out of nowhere. It cracks me up how that startles the boys every time =]
